Hubble Telescope Primary Camera Is Offline
The Hubble Space Telescope is in trouble again. NASA said Monday the satellite's main camera -- its most powerful -- has shut down unexpectedly and it's unlikely scientists will be able to return it to its full capability. The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) is the telescope's most depended upon by scientists according to NASA. The agency says it might be able to return about a third of the camera's capability by mid-February. The problem, which occurred at around 0730 EST on January 27, appears to be a short in the camera's backup power supply. The system's software placed the Hubble's systems into "safe" mode to protect them. Scientists reset the telescope's system, but were unable to get the ACS back online. NASA's Preston Burch told reporters via teleconference, "Obviously, we are very disappointed by this latest event because of the popularity of the ACS instrument with astronomers." Although other instruments are available for scientific use, the ACS's wide field channel provided scientists with the ultra-deep field and the deepest views into the universe.
Christiana man accused of exposing himself on Web camera
Internet Web cameras showed a Christiana man exposing his genitals while trying to solicit a 15-year-old girl to have sex with him, a sheriffs detective testified Monday.Defendant Randy Straley, 38, of 750 Eagle Sham Drive was recorded while touching himself on a Web camera, Detective Mickey McCullough testified.Straley communicated in an Internet chat room in December and January he wanted to have sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl, the detective said. During those conversations, Straley asked for sex eight times, showed himself on the Web cam twice and reported a friend had sex with his 12-year-old daughter but Straley didnt report it as required by state law.McCullough charged Straley with eight counts of solicitation of a minor, two counts of solicitation of a minor to observe sexual acts and failing to report child sex abuse concerning his friend.After McCulloughs testimony, General Sessions Court Judge David Loughry transferred the case to the grand jury for possible indictments.Assistant District Attorney Laural Nutt asked McCullough to describe Straleys Internet conversations.Straley wrote he had been with younger girls, the detective said.

Without much cajoling, international award-winning photographer Song Jin Tek reveals the secrets behind his remarkable photo of a bird diving underwater with a fish firmly in its beak. Conventional wisdom has it that nature photography requires patience and luck, but Song, whose work ranked 9th in the Photographic Society Americas colour slide division in 1990, says he can make birds, dragonflies, butterflies and insects pose for him. His birdshot, entitled Catching (1990), was actually a scene from an aquarium. As part of the props preparation for the shot, Song impaled a live fish on a wire and planted it firmly among rocks in the middle of the aquarium. Other fish, meant only for the camera, were made to swim among the leafy sides, shielded to prevent from distracting the bird.
