Photography project shows the world through children's eyes

Youths spent the entire summer, fall and half of winter snapping more than 700 photographs in their community. The results of their photography project, titled "Freedom Court Through Children's Eyes: A Photo Documentary" were unveiled Saturday.

They young photographers of Freedom Court, a housing project on Breiel Boulevard in Middletown, were asked why they had taken the shots they had and what messages they thought others might find in their photos. The kids were asked to take photos that would express something about themselves and Freedom Court to other people in the community.

Snowy perfection

Last night my world turned white. I was sorry the snow fell after darkness fell because I love watching it come down, but my gratitude for this first decent snowfall of the season could not be spoiled by its timing.

I have many friends who dread snowfalls, and I feel sorry for them. I do understand about the inconvenience and cold and shoveling and dangers of falling and car crashes. But for me, the sheer beauty of it outweighs all its downsides. Besides, kids love it. Every child should have some really outstanding snow memories to carry through life. This is one treasure of childhood that doesn't cost parents a cent.

On snow days, everything seems to slow down, including me. I find myself satisfied with the simplest things. My desires are for a cup of coffee, a bowl of soup and a good view of the bird feeders in the backyard.

Art Naturally festival at Guild Inn cancelled

Art Naturally, Scarborough's famed arts festival drawing more than 13,000 visitors annually to the Guild Inn Gardens, has been cancelled this year.

What's more, there are no immediate plans to resurrect the 22-year-old festival in the future, although Ward 43 Councillor Paul Ainslie (Scarborough East) hopes the event will resume after a redevelopment project slated for the Guild is completed in two to three years.

Art Naturally, the largest festival of its kind in Toronto, is a two-day event hosted every August by the Scarborough Arts Council.

Billed as "the event of the summer on the Bluffs," it features more than 75 artists displaying and selling pottery, paintings, photography, sculptures, wood work, jewelry and more in the Guild Inn Gardens.

But the board decided to cancel this year's event after an 18-month consultation process with community groups, communications co-ordinator Alissa Von Bargen said.
